Product Description

The key components of a synchromesh gearbox are the engine shaft, lay shaft, output shaft, gears on lay shaft, gears on output shaft, cone, synchronizer hub, sliding sleeve, and synchronizer ring. The engine shaft connects to the clutch and the clutch gear, which transmits power to the lay shaft. The lay shaft has five fixed gears, with gear 5 meshing with the clutch gear. The output shaft has four gears and external cones with dog teeth. The cones are engaged with the sliding sleeve, which is connected to the shift fork and the synchronizer ring. The synchronizer hub has external teeth for the sliding sleeve to mesh with and the synchronizer ring has an internal cone shape to engage with the cone. The driver shifts gears by moving the shift fork, which presses the synchronizer ring inside the cone.

A synchromesh gearbox is a compact transmission system that uses special devices called synchromesh for smooth, quiet gear shifting. Instead of dog clutches, the synchromesh ensures friction between gears before selecting the final gear for output transmission. This type of transmission is commonly found in 5-speed manual transmissions with 1 reverse gear, such as the Maruti Suzuki Swift.

Why do We Need Synchromesh Gearbox?

The transition from sliding mesh to constant mesh transmission brought about improvements in smoothness, noise reduction, and quicker gear shifting response. While the constant mesh system eliminated issues such as double-de-clutching and wear and tear that were present in the sliding mesh gearbox.
  • The constant mesh gearbox has a slower response time when shifting gears due to the need for the dog clutches to mesh with the rotating gear pair, which is a slow process."
  • The constant mesh gearbox lacks a mechanism to bring the clutch shaft, main shaft, and lay shaft to the same rotational speed, leading to harsh shifting.
  • Wear and tear on the teeth of the dog clutches leads to increased maintenance of the system."
  • The shifting process in a constant mesh gearbox is noisy due to the need for the dog clutches to make contact with the rotating gear pair.
  • The constant mesh gearbox is less compact compared to a synchromesh gearbox.

Application of synchromesh gearbox :

The synchromesh gearbox is widely utilized, as roughly half of all vehicles on the road use it. This type of gearbox can be found in the Maruti Suzuki Swift, which has a 5-speed manual transmission with 1 reverse gear. It is also used in bikes such as the KTM Duke 390cc, and many race cars, such as those used in Formula 1, have a modified version of the synchromesh gearbox to handle the sudden gear shifts necessary for racing on zig-zag tracks with sharp turns.
